Imbube African book festival and awards

ímbubé : (noun) Zulu word for Lion

This festival & awards was inspired by this quote from Chinua Achebe:

“Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter… Once I realized that, I had to be a writer. It’s not one man’s job. But it is something we have to do, so that the story of the hunt will also reflect the agony, the travail — the bravery, even, of the lions.”

The Festival is a daylong activity that includes TED-style talks by prominent members of the literary community, panel discussions on different literary activities, award sessions for short story writers, exhibitions and book signings.

Speakers & Panelist at Imbube 2017 include: Debola Williams, Enajite Efemuaye, Steve Harris, Toni Kan, Edirin Edewor, Ini Akpan and more

Living Through The Leaves #LTTL2017

Our mission is to share some of the books we have enjoyed reading in the club to build a continually growing community of readers. In furtherance of its mission, The Book Club, Lagos is organising a literary appreciation event tagged “Living Through The Leaves”.

The event will feature excerpts from selected Nigerian literature as a stage performance (monologues and drama), spoken word, and music!!! The cast is made up of book lovers who will be acting out various characters from the selected books.

Our November book reading is “A Conspiracy of Ravens” by Othuke Ominiabohs.

A Conspiracy of Ravens is a thriller that digs into the unrest in the Niger Delta and draws a connection between it and the Boko Haram insurgency and the Nigerian Civil War.

We can’t wait to discuss this book at the next meeting.

Our October book reading is “Don’t Die on Wednesday” by Micheal Afenfia.

The book is a combination of fiction and reality, with real names and places like Manchester United, Tottenham, Old Trafford, London e.t.c

The author used an issue as contemporary as football to tell the infectious story of a successful young Nigerian who faced challenges that finally ended his career. It eventually led to issues with his marital and family life.
